Book Discussion on Half the Sky: Presented by the Leauge of Women Voters!

BOOK DISCUSSION ON WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT IN THE FACE OF DOMESTIC/
CHILD SEX ABUSE

April 17, Noon to 1:00pm, the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Geneva and the Geneva Public Library
and are co-sponsoring a book discussion of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for
Women Worldwide by Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn.

Pulitzer Prize winning authors, Kristof and WuDunn, report their interviews and personal experiences
with several extraordinary girls and young women struggling against oppression in Africa and Asia.
Among the featured stories is one about a Cambodian teenager who was sold into sex slavery and an
Ethiopian woman who suffered devastating injuries in childbirth. Drawing on the authors’ experiences,
the book depicts the anger, sadness, clarity, and, ultimately, hope of women who were trapped in brutal
patriarchal societies.

They show how a little help can transform the lives of women and girls. That Cambodian girl eventually
escaped from her brothel and, with assistance from an aid group, built a thriving retail business that
supports her family. The Ethiopian woman had her injuries repaired and in time became a surgeon. A
Zimbabwean mother of five, counseled to return to school, earned her doctorate and became an expert
on AIDS.

Through these stories, Kristof and WuDunn help us see that the key to economic progress lies in
unleashing women’s potential. They make clear how so many people have helped to do just that, and
how we can each do our part. Throughout much of the world, the greatest unexploited economic
resource is the female half of the population. Countries such as China have prospered precisely because
they emancipated women and brought them into the formal economy. Unleashing that potential
globally is not only the right thing to do; it’s also the best strategy for fighting poverty. Deeply felt,
pragmatic, and inspirational, Half the Sky is essential reading for every global citizen.

Staff members from Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes will be attending. Safe Harbors provides services
for individuals, children and families that have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault and/or
child sex abuse. Half the Sky depicts the oppression in societies abroad, but there are serious issues
here in the Finger Lakes area and it is hoped that through discussions of such topics as domestic abuse,
self-esteem, education for females, cultural issues and more that discussion participants will learn more
about how to combat these issues in our own community and in the global community.

This book discussion is open to the public. Please join us at the Geneva Public Library on April 17, noon
to 1:00 pm. Beverages and cookies will be provided. For more information call the Geneva Public Library
at 789-5303, Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes at 781-1093 or 536-9654 or e-mail Kathy Garcia, LWV
program chair, at kathleenjgarcia@gmail.com.
